Dynamic olfactometry

Dynamic olfactometry, defined and regulated by the EN 13725: 2022 Technical Standard, is the only internationally accepted method for determining odor concentration.

The GruppoLuci Laboratory of Dynamic Olfactometry is accredited by ACCREDIA - Accreditation n.1744L - Accreditation n.1744L - according to UNI CEI EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018 standard for the performance of tests designed to determine odor concentration by means of dynamic olfactometry.

Dynamic olfactometry is the only internationally accepted method for the measurement of odor concentration (European Commission - JRC Reference Report on Monitoring of Emissions to Air and Water from IED Installations - 2018). It is regulated by the EN 13725: 2022 Technical Standard "Stationary source emissions - Determination of odour concentration by dynamic olfactometry and odour emission rate".

The phases of the activity may be summarized as follows:

  • Site inspection;
  • Collection of odorigenic samples from emission sources (stacks, biofilters, tanks, heaps ...);
  • Analyses of samples in order to determine odor concentration;
  • Evaluation of results and possible confrontation with laws in force.

LOD Srl performs odor quantification in air samples collected under the most varied environmental conditions. The collected samples are analyzed in the olfactometric chamber within thirty hours from sampling. The olfactometric chamber is equipped with an Olfactometer having four workstations that simultaneously allow measurements by the examiners.

A group of selected persons (examiners) determines the threshold for odor detection in the sampled effluent, taking into consideration sensory and behavioral criteria. The number of dilutions with neutral air at which the odor becomes perceptible by 50% of examiners is expressed as an index of odor concentration in Odor Units per Meter Cube (ouE/m3).

Olfactometric analyses support industrial research and development in any plant. They are indispensable to control odors both in premises subject to Integrated Environmental Authorization or to Environmental Certification, and from the point of view of art. 272 bis of Decree-Law 152/2006. Through olfactometric analyses, it is also possible to evaluate the efficiency of environmental measures adopted to abate odors, while obtaining useful information for a correct plant management.

LOD has been taking part to the main world intercalibration circuit since 2009, obtaining excellent results, both in terms of repeatability and accuracy of olfactometric analysis.
